Hotpoint / Indesit Error F05 — and F01

On Hotpoint and Indesit, error F05 means the board believes the drum has not emptied: the pump cannot drain it — a blockage or a failed pump — or the pressure switch is reporting the drum full. Error F01 is more serious: a fault on the control board. F05 is a clean-out or a pump; F01 needs board-level diagnosis.

F05 is shown on the display on models that have one; on models without a display, it is flashed as a combination of programme lights — count the flashing lights against the chart in your manual, or simply tell us the symptom: cycle finished or stalled, water standing in the drum, door locked. That symptom set is F05 territory regardless of how it is displayed.

The two branches of F05

Branch one: it really cannot drain

The pump filter or the pump itself is blocked — coins, hair grips, lint and the general grit of family laundry — or the pump has failed. Hotpoint and Indesit filters sit behind the front kick panel or a small flap depending on model, and some models hide the pump behind the back panel with no user filter at all, which is why the same code is a five-minute clean on one machine and an engineer visit on the next. The drain mechanics are shared with the Bosch and Samsung stories on our Bosch E18 page.

Branch two: it drained, but the board does not know

The pressure switch reads the water level through a thin air tube. Soap scum and dirt build up in the pressure chamber at the tub until the switch sticks in the "full" position: the drum is visibly empty, yet the machine insists F05 and will not spin or unlock properly. Cleaning the chamber and tube, or replacing the switch, cures it — and note this is a level-sensing fault, not a pump fault, so a new pump would not have fixed it. The same pressure-switch behaviour drives the overfill faults on our won't fill / overfills page.

Safe checks

  • If your model has a user-accessible filter, drain via the flap into a tray, clean the filter, and check the impeller.
  • If the drum is empty through the glass yet F05 persists, suspect the pressure switch branch — that is not a user repair.
  • Reset once only: switch off at the socket for two minutes, then try a drain programme. If F05 returns immediately, stop — repeated resets do not clear a blockage.

F01: the control board

F01 indicates a fault the board detects in itself — typically a shorted triac, the component that switches power to the motor or another load. Sometimes the root cause is the load it drives: a motor failing short can take the board with it, which is why an honest F01 diagnosis tests the motor and other loads before fitting a board, or the new board fails the same way. Boards run to the top of the price range (€279–€420 fitted with the motor where needed), so on an older Hotpoint we will lay out the repair-versus-replace numbers plainly before you commit. Nothing about F01 is a DIY fix.

What we test on the visit

For F05: drain and inspect the filter and pump, test the pump electrically and under load, then test the pressure switch and clear its chamber and tube if the drum was already empty. For F01: board inspection and load testing — motor, element, valves — before any board is ordered. Every part fitted is the part the tests named.

What it typically costs in Dublin

Typical Dublin ranges, checked November 2026. Fixed price confirmed after diagnosis, before work; call-out fee stated when booking.

  • Blocked filter/pump clear: covered by the €79 call-out
  • Drain pump replacement: €149–€199
  • Main PCB (F01), and motor where implicated: €279–€420

Full pricing on our costs page, and the door symptoms that come with standing water are covered on our door won't open page.

The Dublin angle

Hotpoint and Indesit machines are the workhorses of Dublin's rental stock, and under Regulation 7 of the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019 a landlord-provided machine that fails with F05 is the landlord's repair — we deal with letting agents across the city and can invoice them directly. Pressure chambers clog faster in hard-water homes — Leixlip supply areas (~200 mg/L) and Bog of the Ring areas (~336 mg/L) — where scale flakes join the soap scum in the chamber.

F05 means the machine believes the drum has not emptied. Either the pump is blocked or has failed so the water genuinely cannot leave, or the pressure switch is stuck reading 'full' even though the drum has drained. The two branches have different fixes, which is why diagnosis comes first.

That is the pressure-switch branch: soap scum and dirt block the pressure chamber or its air tube, so the switch never reports 'empty'. The pump is innocent. The chamber needs cleaning or the switch replacing — an engineer job, but a modest one.

F01 is a fault on the main control board, often a shorted triac. It is the most serious of the common Hotpoint codes because boards are €279–€420 fitted, and the load that damaged the board — often the motor — must be tested first or the new board can fail the same way.

By a flashing combination of the programme lights on the front panel. The exact combination is in your manual's fault chart. The symptoms — stalled cycle, standing water, locked door — identify it just as reliably when you describe them to us.
