Bosch Washing Machine Error E18 — and E23

Bosch error E18 (F18 on some models) means the drum has not emptied in time — a drain fault: a blocked filter or pump, a kinked drain hose, or a failed pump. Error E23 is different: water detected in the base, and the Aquastop has shut the water off. E18 is a clean-out; E23 means find the leak.

E18 appears at the end of the drain stage: the machine has pumped, or tried to pump, for longer than the programme allows and the water level has not fallen. The laundry sits in dirty water and the door stays locked until the drum empties. Work through the drain path in order — filter, pump, hose — because that is the order of likelihood as well.

What causes Bosch E18

  • Blocked filter: the pump filter at the front bottom corner collects hair, coins, buttons, lint and grit. It is the cause in most E18 callouts, and months of soap residue makes the mat tighter.
  • Blocked or failed pump: an object jammed in the pump impeller, or a pump motor that has burned out. A hum with no water movement means the pump is powered but stuck or dead.
  • Drain hose problems: a kink behind the machine, a hose pushed too far down the standpipe, or a blocked sink spigot connection where the hose joins under the sink.
  • Foam: heavy overdosing of detergent can foam-lock the pump; the machine "drains" foam, reads the level wrong and times out.

Safe checks you can do

  • Switch off. Open the filter flap, place a shallow tray and towels, drain through the emergency hose if fitted, then unscrew the filter slowly. Clean out everything you find and check the pump impeller behind it turns with a fingertip nudge and is not jammed by a coin or wire.
  • Check the drain hose for kinks where the machine was pushed back, and confirm the standpipe or sink connection is clear.
  • Run a short drain/spin programme with the drum empty. If E18 returns with a clean filter and a silent pump, the pump itself has failed; if it hums but does not move water, something is still jammed or the impeller is broken.

Do not run repeated cycles "to clear it". A jammed pump overheats, and standing dirty water keeps the door locked and the laundry souring. The general drain story is the same one behind our door won't open page.

E23: water in the base — a different fault

E23 (F23 on some models) means the float switch in the machine's base tray has lifted: water has leaked inside and collected at the bottom, and the Aquastop has cut the supply for safety. Clearing the code without finding the leak guarantees it returns. The hunt is the one on our washing machine leaking page — door seal, hoses, detergent drawer, or an element seal split by limescale. Tilt nothing, mop nothing inside the cabinet yourself; the base and the float are an engineer's job, and the machine should stay off and isolated at the tap until it is checked.

What we test on the visit

We drain the machine safely, inspect and clean the filter housing and pump, test the pump electrically and under load, prove the drain hose and standpipe flow, then run a full drain test. For E23 we dry the base, run the machine under observation and trace the leak to the component before replacing anything. Diagnosis first, parts second — always.

What it typically costs in Dublin

The Dublin angle

Bosch machines are everywhere in Dublin's pre-2001 housing stock (70.7% of homes), and filters here clog with the usual mix — plus grit in hard-water areas. Homes normally supplied by Leixlip (Swords, Lucan, Finglas, ~200 mg/L) and the Bog of the Ring (Rush, Balbriggan, ~336 mg/L) shed scale into the sump that softer areas (Ballymore Eustace ~50 mg/L) simply do not. In the 27% of households that are flats, an E23 leak ignored is the downstairs neighbour's ceiling.

E18 (F18 on some models) means the machine could not drain the drum within the allowed time. The most common cause is a blocked pump filter, followed by a jammed or failed drain pump, then a kinked or blocked drain hose.

Often, yes: drain the machine through the filter flap, clean the filter thoroughly, check the pump impeller turns freely, and run a drain programme. If E18 returns straight away, the pump has failed or the blockage is deeper, and it becomes an engineer job — typically €149–€199 for a pump.

E18 is a drain timeout — the water will not leave. E23 is a leak alarm: water has collected in the base tray and the Aquastop has shut the machine down for safety. E23 needs the leak found and fixed; do not just reset it.

Either the pump is weak or its impeller is damaged, the blockage sits beyond the filter in the sump hose, or the drain hose/standpipe is restricted. A pump that hums but moves little water is on its way out and will keep timing out until replaced.
