Samsung Washing Machine Error 5C — and 4C

Samsung error 5C (5E on older models) means the machine is not draining, or is draining too slowly, so the cycle stops with water in the drum and the door locked. The cause is usually the debris filter, a jammed or failed drain pump, or a blocked hose. Its mirror image, error 4C, means the machine cannot fill.

Samsung machines are explicit about which end of the water path has failed. 5C is the drain end: the board expected the drum to empty and the level did not fall. 4C is the fill end: the board opened the inlet valve and the level did not rise. Treat them separately, because the parts, checks and costs differ — but note the shared first step for 5C: the drum is holding water, so the door will stay locked until you drain it, exactly as described on our door won't open page.

What causes Samsung 5C

  • The debris filter: Samsung's front filter traps coins, hair, lint and small garments' worth of fluff. When it mats solid, draining slows until the machine times out into 5C.
  • The drain pump: jammed by an object that passed the filter, or simply worn out. A humming pump that moves no water is jammed or has a broken impeller; a silent pump has failed electrically.
  • The drain hose: kinked behind the machine, frozen with grease at the sink spigot, or pushed too deep into the standpipe so it siphons and confuses the level sensing.
  • Foam and level errors: chronic overdosing of detergent foams the pump out and can produce drain errors that vanish once the machine is rinsed through.

Safe checks for 5C

  • Switch off. Open the front filter flap, drain through the small hose into a tray, then remove and wash the debris filter under the tap.
  • Shine a light into the filter housing and check the pump impeller is visible, intact and spins with light resistance.
  • Straighten the drain hose, check the sink spigot is clear, and run a drain-and-spin empty. Success with no return of 5C means it was the filter; an immediate repeat means the pump.

4C: the machine cannot fill

4C (4E on older models) appears when the fill takes too long. Work through the supply before blaming the machine: is the tap behind the machine fully open, the inlet hose unkinked, and the mesh filter in the hose connection clear of grit? If supply is proven and the machine still will not fill, the inlet valve itself has failed — part of the wider picture on our machine won't start or won't fill page. In hard-water districts those inlet meshes choke steadily; where the mesh is choked, the valve behind it usually is not far behind.

What we test on the visit

For 5C we test the pump electrically and under load, clear the sump and hose path end to end, and prove a full drain against the clock. For 4C we prove water pressure at the hose, test the inlet valve solenoids, and check the pressure switch and its air tube — a lying pressure switch can mimic both codes. If the spin also failed with a UE code showing, that is the balance story on our not spinning page, and we will sort both in the one visit.

The Dublin angle

Fill faults track the water map. Homes normally supplied by Leixlip — Swords, Lucan, Finglas — receive water around 200 mg/L and the Bog of the Ring supply to Rush, Balbriggan and Skerries is around 336 mg/L: inlet meshes and valves fur steadily on those supplies, while soft-water homes on Ballymore Eustace (~50 mg/L) mostly meet 5C as a plain filter blockage. Either way it is a first-visit fix in the great majority of cases. Samsung models are common in newer Dublin apartment developments too, where a 5C stop mid-cycle with a locked door is a same-day problem — there is no spare laundry space, and a soaking load cannot wait until Monday.

5C (5E on older models) is a drain error: the machine cannot empty the drum, or empties it too slowly. The usual causes are a blocked debris filter, a jammed or failed drain pump, or a kinked or blocked drain hose.

Drain the drum through the filter flap, remove and wash the debris filter, check the pump impeller is clear, and straighten the drain hose. Run an empty drain-and-spin. If 5C returns immediately, the pump needs replacement — typically €149–€199 in Dublin.

4C (4E on older models) is a fill error: water is not entering the machine fast enough. Check the tap is fully open, the hose is not kinked, and the mesh filter in the hose connection is clear. If the supply is fine, the inlet valve has failed.

Drain the water through the filter flap using the small drain hose and a shallow tray. Once the level drops, the lock releases — never force the door against a drum of water.
