Washing Machine Not Spinning

If your washing machine finishes the cycle but the clothes come out dripping wet, the spin has failed — either the water never drained away, or the drum never got up to full spin speed. The causes are an unbalanced load, a blocked pump or filter, a worn belt, or tired motor brushes. Most are fixed on the first visit.

A washer that will not spin has almost always stopped for a reason the machine can detect. Modern front loaders will not launch into a high-speed spin with water still in the drum, and they will not spin an unbalanced load either — the control board slows the drum, tries to redistribute the clothes, and eventually gives up and ends the cycle with everything soaking wet. That is why a spin problem is often really a drain problem in disguise, and why the first question is always whether the machine emptied properly.

The four causes we see most in Dublin homes

1. The pump never emptied the drum

If the drain pump is blocked or has failed, water stays in the drum and the spin is locked out. Hair, coins, bra wires and lint build up in the filter over months; soap residue and grit from dirty work clothes make it worse. If your machine hums but does not empty, or the clothes are sitting in grey water, start with our guide to the pump and filter before assuming the worst.

2. An unbalanced or overloaded drum

One heavy item — a bath mat, a single pair of jeans, a duvet cover that has swallowed the rest of the load — throws the drum off balance. The machine rocks, the spin aborts, and the wash ends wet. This is not a breakdown: redistribute the load, add a couple of towels to even it out, and run a rinse and spin.

3. A worn or snapped drive belt

The belt connects the motor to the drum. Over years it stretches and perishes; the drum may turn slowly during the wash but slip completely under spin load, or stop turning altogether. If your fault is a drum that does not rotate at all, see washing machine drum not turning.

4. Worn motor brushes

On brushed motors, the carbon brushes wear down until contact becomes intermittent. The classic pattern is a machine that washes weakly, spins sometimes and not others, and may spark or smell faintly electrical. Brushes are a wear part, not a catastrophe — but left too long they can damage the motor itself.

Error codes that point at a spin fault

Samsung and LG machines commonly show UE (or Ub) for an unbalanced load — the machine is telling you it could not balance the drum for the spin. A drain code alongside it, such as Samsung 5C or LG OE, means the spin never started because the water never left. Treat the code as the starting point, not the whole diagnosis.

Safe checks before you call

  • Open the filter flap at the front bottom corner, put a shallow tray and towel down, and drain and clean the filter. Check for coins, hair grips and lint.
  • Try a rinse-and-spin with a smaller, evenly spread load. Note whether the drum reaches speed.
  • Check the machine is level and not rocking on the floor — a rocking machine triggers balance protection.
  • Listen: a humming pump with no water movement means a blockage or failed pump; a drum that turns by hand with a loose, floppy feel can mean a slipped belt.

Do not tip the machine back or open the cabinet yourself. If the drum will not turn by hand at all, or you smell burning, stop and call — that points to the motor or bearings, which need testing, not guessing.

The Dublin angle

Spin faults show up fast in Dublin homes because so much laundry has nowhere else to dry. With rain on roughly half the days of the year and 27% of households in apartments, a soaking load cannot simply be hung outside — it goes back in the machine or to the laundrette. Hard-water areas supplied by Leixlip, normally around 200 mg/L, also see more pump wear from grit and scale shed by the element, while homes on the softer Ballymore Eustace supply, around 50 mg/L, more often present with simple filter blockages. Either way, it is a same-week problem for most families, not one to live with.

Because the spin is locked out until the drum is empty and balanced. A blocked pump, a failed drain pump, one heavy unbalanced item, a worn belt or worn motor brushes are the usual reasons. Clean the filter first; if it still will not spin, the pump, belt or motor needs testing.

UE means unbalanced load: the machine could not spread the clothes evenly enough for a safe high-speed spin. Open the door, redistribute the load, remove a heavy item if needed, and run a rinse and spin. If UE appears with small, balanced loads, the suspension or motor may be at fault.

You can safely clean the drain filter, check the load balance and make sure the machine sits level. Belt, brush and pump replacement involve opening the cabinet and working near the motor and electrics, so those are engineer jobs.

Usually worth it. A pump clear is covered by the €79 call-out and a pump replacement is €149–€199, against €419–€999+ for a new machine in Ireland. We confirm the fixed price after diagnosis, before work, so you can decide with the real number in front of you.
