Washing Machine Noisy or Vibrating

Noise tells you where to look. A roar that builds with speed — the aeroplane taking off — is worn drum bearings. Banging on spin is a load, suspension or levelling problem. An intermittent rattle or scrape is often a coin or bra wire trapped in the drum. Bearings only get worse — book a roaring machine now.

Do one test before anything else. Machine off, door open, spin the drum by hand and listen. Then lift the drum gently from the top edge and feel for play — movement up and down between the inner drum and the outer tub. A smooth, silent hand-spin with no play rules bearings out. A gritty rumble, a clicking roughness, or a clunk of play puts bearings at the top of the list.

The causes, by sound

Bearings: the aeroplane roar

Drum bearings sit behind the tub, sealed against water by a lip seal. When that seal ages, water and detergent reach the bearings, they corrode, and the noise builds over weeks from a whine to a roar worst at full spin speed. You may also see rusty or dark marks on laundry, or play in the drum. Bearings are a big job — the tub comes apart — which is why they are the most expensive common repair. Left long enough, the drum damages the tub and the machine is finished, so early diagnosis genuinely saves machines. A drum that has started to seize is covered on our drum not turning page.

Shock absorbers and springs

The tub hangs on springs and is damped by shock absorbers. Worn dampers let the tub swing wide on spin: heavy banging against the cabinet, the machine walking across the floor, and loads that refuse to balance — which then shows up as the spin failures described on our not spinning page. Dampers wear in pairs and are replaced in pairs.

Uneven floor and feet

A machine on a suspended timber floor, or with one adjustable foot wound in, will rock and drum against the floorboards at spin. Level it front-to-back and side-to-side and lock the feet. In terraced and semi-detached Dublin homes this is often the whole story after a machine has been moved for cleaning or a new floor.

Transit bolts left in

New and moved machines ship with transit bolts locking the tub. If they were never removed, the machine vibrates violently from its first spin and can damage the tub. If your machine has been violent since installation day, check the back panel for the bolts before blaming parts.

Foreign objects

Coins, screws, hair grips and bra wires escape pockets and drum holes. A wire scraping between drum and tub makes a rhythmic scratch synced to rotation; a coin in the pump rattles on drain. The filter catches some of it — hair and lint too — so clean the filter first and listen again. Objects inside the tub need an engineer to retrieve before they puncture a hose or the tub itself.

The Dublin angle

Noise travels in Dublin housing. Semi-detached homes are 29.9% of the stock and terraced 33.4%, so a roaring spin at 10pm is your neighbour's problem too, and in the 27% of households that are apartments it can breach house rules. Hard water speeds bearing-seal wear indirectly: scale from areas normally supplied by Leixlip (~200 mg/L) or the Bog of the Ring (~336 mg/L) is not the bearing killer — water past a worn seal is — but gritty scale-laden water shortens seal life, while soft Ballymore Eustace supply homes (~50 mg/L) more often present with simple damper and levelling faults.

What it typically costs in Dublin

Typical Dublin ranges, checked November 2026. Fixed price confirmed after diagnosis, before work; call-out fee stated when booking.

  • Filter clear and foreign-object check: covered by the €79 call-out
  • Drum bearings: €279–€420
  • Motor or main PCB (rare noise sources): €279–€420

Levelling and transit-bolt removal found on the visit are dealt with within the agreed call-out and labour. Full pricing on our costs page. Bearings at €279–€420 against €419–€999+ for a new machine is a genuine judgement call — we will inspect the tub and give you an honest recommendation either way.

That rising roar on spin is the classic sound of worn drum bearings. The bearing seal has let water in, the bearings are corroded, and the noise will only grow. Confirm it by spinning the empty drum by hand — bearings feel gritty and sound rough even at hand speed.

It depends on the machine. Bearings are typically €279–€420 fitted because the tub comes apart. On a sound machine under eight to ten years old, usually yes; on an older machine where the tub is already damaged, no. We diagnose first and confirm the fixed price before any work.

Usually not — banging and walking point to worn shock absorbers, an unlevel machine, a chronically unbalanced load, or transit bolts never removed. Bearings roar rather than bang. The hand-spin test separates them quickly.

Yes. A coin or bra wire between the drum and tub scrapes in time with rotation and can eventually puncture the tub or a hose. Clean the filter first; anything deeper needs retrieval by an engineer before it does expensive damage.
