Turn the drum by hand first, with the machine switched off. That one check splits this fault in two. If the drum spins freely and silently by hand but never moves on a cycle, the drive is not reaching it — belt, motor or control. If the drum is stiff, grinding or completely seized, the problem is inside the tub: bearings or a foreign object jammed between drum and tub. The fixes, and the costs, are very different.
The main causes
Belt off or broken
The drive belt runs from the motor pulley to the large drum pulley. It stretches with age and heat, walks off the pulley, or snaps outright. Symptoms: the motor whirs, the drum does nothing, and by hand the drum feels unusually free, almost loose. A belt is one of the cheaper repairs in the machine. If instead the drum turns but the machine will not spin up to speed, see washing machine not spinning.
Motor failure and worn brushes
On brushed motors, worn carbon brushes are the classic cause of a drum that starts weakly, then stops, then gives up entirely. Left running, worn brushes arc and can score the motor's commutator, turning a modest repair into a motor replacement. Inverter motors have no brushes; failure there is the motor itself or the board driving it.
Door interlock not engaging
The machine will not run the motor until the door lock confirms the door is shut and sealed. A failed interlock, a broken door catch or a misaligned door means the cycle appears to start — lights on, maybe a fill — but the drum never turns. If the door also will not release afterwards, read washing machine door won't open.
Seized bearings or a jammed object
A coin, screw or bra wire can drop through the drum holes and wedge between the drum and the outer tub. Collapsed bearings seize the drum entirely and are usually preceded by weeks of growing noise — the story on our noisy washing machine page. A drum that will not move by hand at all needs an engineer, not force.
Safe checks before you call
- Switch off at the socket. Turn the drum by hand: free and silent, stiff and gritty, or locked solid? Note which.
- Check the door closes with a positive click and the door-lock symbol lights. Try a short programme and listen for the lock engaging.
- Look through the door glass for a trapped item visibly wedged at the drum edge.
- Try a different programme (a plain spin) to rule out a programme-specific fault.
Do not remove the back panel to inspect the belt yourself if the machine is under any warranty, and never run the machine with panels off. If the drum is seized, do not force it — you can bend the drum spider.
The Dublin angle
With 70.7% of Dublin homes built before 2001, a large share of the machines we attend are older belt-and-brush models where these are straightforward wear repairs. In hard-water districts — Leixlip supply areas like Swords, Lucan and Finglas at around 200 mg/L, and Bog of the Ring areas such as Rush and Balbriggan at around 336 mg/L — scale shed inside the tub adds grit that accelerates bearing and belt wear. Under the EU Right to Repair rules applying in Ireland from 31 July 2026, manufacturers must keep parts available for washing machines for 5–10 years, which keeps many of these repairs viable.
