LG Washing Machine Error OE — and IE

LG error OE stands for Output Error: the machine has tried to drain and the water level has not fallen. It is a drain fault — the filter, the drain pump or the hose in almost every case. Its counterpart, IE (Input Error), means the machine cannot fill in the allowed time: supply tap, hose mesh, or inlet valve.

OE stops the cycle with water in the drum, which means the door stays locked and the laundry sits soaking. Before anything else, get the water out and the filter checked — on LG machines the filter sits behind the flap at the front bottom left, beside the emergency drain hose, and a blocked filter is behind most OE callouts we attend in Dublin.

What causes LG OE

  • Blocked drain filter: hair, coins, lint and soap residue mat across the filter until draining slows to a timeout.
  • Drain pump failure: LG pumps work hard and are a known wear item. A loud, harsh pump sound in the weeks before OE, then silence or a weak hum, is the usual story.
  • Hose routing: a kinked drain hose, a standpipe that is too low (siphoning) or too high (the pump cannot lift against it), or a blocked sink connection.
  • Installation issues: on newer machines, OE shortly after a move or install often traces to the drain hose arrangement rather than any failed part.

Safe checks for OE

  • Switch off and unplug. Put down towels and a shallow tray, pull out the emergency drain hose, unplug its cap and let the drum empty into the tray.
  • Unscrew the filter, clean it fully, and check inside the housing: the impeller should turn with a light magnetic resistance, in steps. Gritty, loose or jammed means pump trouble.
  • Check the drain hose run: no kinks, standpipe at a sensible height, sink spigot clear.
  • Refit, plug in, and run a rinse-and-spin empty. OE returning within minutes with a clean filter and proven hose means the pump is done.

If OE arrives with a UE code on other occasions, the machine has two complaints — drainage and balance — and the background is on our not spinning page.

IE: the machine cannot fill

IE appears when the drum does not reach the expected level in time. First prove the supply: tap fully open behind the machine, inlet hose straight, and the mesh filters in the hose connections clear — on hard-water supplies these choke with grit and scale flakes and strangle the fill. If the supply is strong at the hose and the machine still will not fill, the inlet valve has failed. The full fill/overfill chain, including the pressure switch, is covered on our won't start, won't fill page, and Samsung's equivalent code is covered on the Samsung 5C and 4C page.

What we test on the visit

We test the drain pump under load and measure its windings, clear the sump hose and filter housing fully, prove the drain path against the clock, and — for IE — prove inlet pressure, test the valve solenoids and check the pressure-sensing tube for blockage or splits. Parts are only ordered once the test names them.

The Dublin angle

OE behaves the same everywhere, but the grit load in the filter does not. Homes normally supplied by Leixlip (Swords, Lucan, Finglas, ~200 mg/L) and the Bog of the Ring (Rush, Balbriggan, Skerries, ~336 mg/L) shed scale into sumps and filters far faster than homes on the soft Ballymore Eustace supply (~50 mg/L) or the Vartry blend around Dublin 4 and Dún Laoghaire (~75 mg/L). In a rented home, Regulation 7 of the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019 puts a failed pump on the landlord, not the tenant — we are happy to invoice letting agents directly. One habit prevents half of these callouts: clean the filter every couple of months, and if your machine sits in a hot press or small utility room, leave the door ajar between washes — standing moisture in the sump is what turns loose lint and hair into a matted plug.

OE (Output Error) means the machine cannot drain properly — the water level did not fall when the pump ran. The usual causes are a blocked drain filter, a failed drain pump, or a kinked, blocked or badly routed drain hose.

Drain the drum through the emergency hose at the filter flap, clean the filter thoroughly, check the pump impeller turns in light steps, and check the drain hose for kinks. Run an empty rinse-and-spin. If OE returns quickly, the pump has failed — typically €149–€199 to replace in Dublin.

IE (Input Error) means the machine cannot fill to the expected level in time. Check the supply tap is fully open, the inlet hose is not kinked, and the mesh filters in the hose connections are clear. If the supply is proven, the inlet valve needs replacement.

Not necessarily. On recent installs OE often comes from the drain hose arrangement — a standpipe too low causing siphoning, or a hose pushed too far in. Check the routing against the manual before assuming a part has failed.
