Hotpoint F01 means a motor circuit fault on a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine. The main control board is not driving the motor correctly, or is not getting the right signal back. The drum usually will not turn.
What you will see
The drum will not turn. The machine may fill, then just sit there doing nothing, or it may stop dead mid-cycle with a load locked inside. Some machines flash F01 straight away at the start. If there is a burning smell, switch the machine off at the plug and leave it off — a failing motor or board should not be run. If the machine is also tripping your fuse board, see washing machine tripping the switch and do not keep resetting it.
Safe checks — there are very few
- One power reset, once. Switch off at the plug, wait two minutes, switch on and try a spin-only programme. If F01 returns, stop there — repeated resets do not help a motor or board fault.
- Check the drum turns by hand. With the power off, open the door and turn the drum. It should move smoothly with slight resistance. A drum that is jammed solid, grinding or clunking is a different fault — tell us, because it changes the diagnosis.
That is the end of the owner checks, and we will say it plainly: brushes and boards are engineer work. The motor sits under the drum with live connections, and a board swap done wrong can write off a repairable machine. There is no safe filter to clean for this one.
Causes, in order of likelihood and cost
- Motor carbon brushes worn down. The cheap one, and the most common. Brushes wear over years until contact is lost and the board reports F01. Symptoms often build up first: weak spin, intermittent turning, then nothing.
- Wiring or connector damage. A chafed wire or a burnt connector at the motor, sometimes after the machine has been walking across the floor on spin.
- Motor failure. The motor itself has failed — less common than brushes, and dearer.
- Main PCB failure. The control board's motor circuit has failed. This is the major-band repair.
What it is not
F01 names a fault family — the motor circuit — not a guaranteed part. The same code covers a set of brushes and a full board, which are hundreds of euro apart, and Hotpoint and Indesit models vary in motor type and board design. Anyone quoting a board over the phone from the code alone is guessing with your money. The circuit has to be tested in order: brushes, wiring, motor, then board. The symptom side of this fault is covered on drum not turning.
A note on intermittent F01
Some machines do not fail cleanly. The drum turns on a light load, fails on a heavy one, or works for a week after a reset and then stops again. That on-and-off pattern is typical of brushes at the very end of their life — contact comes and goes with load and vibration — and it is worth booking while the machine still half works, because the test results are clearer and the fix is the same standard-band job. Do not keep a machine in that state running unattended, though: a motor circuit that is failing intermittently can overheat, and the burning-smell rule above applies the first time you notice it. Note what the machine was doing each time it failed — load size, programme, point in the cycle — and bring that to the booking call. Patterns like that shorten diagnosis, and on a Hotpoint or Indesit they often separate a brush job from a board job before we even open the machine.
The priced fix — and the honest conversation
Brushes are a standard repair: €149–€249 all-in. A motor or main PCB is a major repair: €279–€420 all-in. The €79 call-out is credited in full against either, you get a fixed written price before work, there is no second call-out charge, and the work carries a 1-year workmanship warranty. Now the honest part: a board at major money on an older budget machine is not always worth doing, and we will tell you so on the visit rather than sell you the job. Our repair or replace guide shows the working. If the machine is not worth fixing, you pay only €79 and get the verdict in writing.
